Hi MEB It’s not enough if it only changes vector shapes. In designer you can use raster brushes to add texture, so a transformer tool should be able to change the raster elements too. And the question is not “Is Inkscape user friendly or not” that is a Trump’ish strategy but “why do we users of Designer still have to plug all those gaps with other apps and workarounds”. FOR YEARS Affinity users mentioned horrible alternatives, plugs and workarounds that do not provide a seamless workflow at all – but just slow creativity down.

The more horrible description of Inkscape and alternatives from the core users here – the bigger the question mark. If everyone posts their interest there it might get the attention of the devs. That is all you have. And no tools. Almost like hope and no vaccine. But once I understand it better, andhow to find tool and use them with the slight difference there are with PS, no problem. I had the same problem using AP : mask and some effect behaving differently, needing more tweaks and tricks than using Gimp… But I paid for it, it would have been stupid to stop.

It’s different with Inkscape: I know it from when it was called Sodipodi, and it was helpfull to use it on Mac too. I don’t think that Serif is seriously trying to target Adobe’s main market. I also remember seeing an article before any affinity app was released not been able to find it that clearly stated the apps were a challenge to the Adobe suite.

The article was a press release written by Serif. I’m not recommending Affinity Suite as an alternative to Adobe to professional colleagues yet , and don’t see myself doing so in the near future. Neither should the idea that Affinity isn’t a replacement for Adobe. It is! No, it’s not. Only for private tasks and maybe for an extremely small sector of professionals. If you do graphics and illustrations for money, you can’t work all day with time consuming workarounds in order to get the job done. A bicycle can get you from A to B. But I still wouldn’t deem it a solid replacement for a car, if you have to drive for km per day for work.

In fact, it’s the only reason for our existence. I don’t see how apps that don’t have non destructive free transform, perspective and warp tools can replace Adobe.. When I first came across Designer I got excited as it was the nearest thing I’d seen to Adobe Fireworks, however the lack of non destructive free transform tools is a real problem and we’ve been waiting a looong time without a peep from the people at Affinity I don’t do graphics or illustrations for money well, not often but I do need a full graphics suite and Affinity is the closest to the Adobe offering I have found.

That it is cross-platform is brilliant and that it is not subscription-based is absolutely the reason I chose it over Adobe. But there are omissions, and the free-form tool is the big one in my book.

So yes, a clunky work-around is to select the paths to distort, go to Edit menu chose Edit in Photo, and use the distort filter there. And then place as pixels in your original vector document. Clunky indeed. Hopefully someone will come up with a plugin?

Not clunky, but completely useless in a lot of scenarios as the exported result will be pixels, not vector. Latter is needed i. Don’t get me wrong, Affinity apps are great and can do a lot of the daily tasks for many. I see it more as an alternative for private use and a small sector of professional designing. That’s all I wanted to say. And I don’t think that Serif is seriously trying to target Adobe’s main market.

For that, simply too many basics are way too “clunky” as you said or missing completely. If only they were to focus some energy on those essentials, they potentially could be a legitimate competitor, not perhaps universally, but at least to a wider segment of professionals. I have just bought the iPad app and it is a great piece of software, but i sooooo miss perspective distort!

Hi MEB It’s not enough if it only changes vector shapes. In designer you can use raster brushes to add texture, so a transformer tool should be able to change the raster elements too.

I wanted to chime in that a free transform or perspective distort tool feels like basic functionality to me, and I can’t accomplish of a lot of the effects I want to achieve without it. I would love if it were added for both vector and pixel elements, and could probably stop using Photoshop entirely for my design work if it were. Seeing how long people have been asking for this feature is pretty disheartening.

We need vector perspective distort badly and other warp tools would be nice too to use this software professionally without frustrating workarounds. I love Affinity. I was a Fireworks user years ago and was so annoyed when Adobe bought it and just let it die not realizing the value it brought in ease of use and layout for screen. Affinity has that intuitive ease of use but is missing this most important feature.

If you really need some features, be more persistent. Learning other apps help having a different mindset like using different features and workflows, it’s is beneficial. Those old versions all had so many problems that I eventually gave up on them. RC1 is better, but the problem I have with it is it isn’t just about learning how to use the app itself, it is that it is still so far from being a real native Mac app that I have to learn to use what amounts to an app running in a Windows app environment with a few Mac-specific features tossed in.

I thought it would be out with the Beta of Publisher but it can be released anytime between now and the official release of Publisher. The only way they will listen, is to make reviews pointing out that this BASIC feature Yes, it’s basic – every other tool has this now!

You know you’re missing a fundamental tool when people will use Inkscape just to get their work done. I use a compliment of apps with their multitude of tools, some of the tools are duplicated but some apps tools give particular features that tool, I just select the app that does what I want it to do. I was just looking for this feature and was surprised to find that it doesn’t exist ALso neede dthere : a way to free transform corners of a group layer in affinnity designer.

I have to say that making logos on Affinity Designer is a pain. Don’t get me wrong, I love your software – already cancelled all Adobe, after almost 20 years. BUT can you just wake up and do updates more frequently? There are so many tools that people ask for, for years and they are SO basic to work on shapes. I read so many forum posts that like years old You have dedicated user base and I hope it is growing because I already convinced some people to use Affinity.

BUT you have to make upgrades faster. I’m still waiting for improvement in so many basic options. If your business model doesn’t allow you to be more active, change it. I’ll add my vote. I downloaded the trial version to try to decide whether to purchase it I already own Affinity Photo and love it. Within the first hour of attempting to do some very basic work designing badges I became completely confounded trying to find a way to accomplish this simple function.

I’m shocked to discover it simply doesn’t exist anywhere in the program. Definitely a must-have. I’m on the fence about purchasing it now, since I may still need to keep using AI just for this reason. I totally appreciate that it’s new in the game, and obviously there’s real-world things preventing it from just creating everything anyone ever requested, etc.

Again, I don’t want to come off as angry or accusitive I am a big fan of Affinity products, but it is disappointing, and I just wanted to ‘point it out’. The reoccurring ‘it doesn’t do that’ does get a bit disheartening, but the fact that you then see the conversation was many years ago and the features are still not present kind of hits it up to a new level of I know that I myself have also been long waiting for things like a ‘blob’ brush vector paint brush where you paint, and it creates a final shape that is the resulting overall SHAPE of the various strokes, rather than a series of individual ‘line strokes’ I can’t really understand why these haven’t been given high priority, considering how long they have been requested for.

I was actually going to post my own thread on this, but ran into this existing thread I wanted to simply do a bit of a perspective distortion on a vector background I am creating, so it was a bit angled to the camera view.

Maybe not all users would have a need for some of the features mentioned, nor others that affinity had in mind for the future. In the long run, it is only going to get harder for Serif with their business model. I mean, it’s a vector graphic software and it’s ! Corel Draw had sophisticated tools for transforming and distorting vector graphics and text 30 years ago!

With the Move Tool selected, click on your image to select it. You should see a vertical handle sticking out from the top of the selection:. Clicking and dragging that handle will allow you to rotate your selection, either clockwise or counter-clockwise. By default, the selection will rotate in a freeform fashion with the degrees of rotation being indicated in the label next to your cursor.

You can rotate your selection in 15 degree increments by holding the Shift key while rotating. This can help you transform your images with more precision. To shear objects with Affinity Photo, select your image with the Move Tool and move your cursor to one of the handles on the sides not the corner handles of the selection:. When you hover your cursor over the left or right handle of your selection, the cursor icon will change to arrows that point upwards and downwards.

At this point you can click and drag up or down to shear your selection vertically. By default, the selection will shear relative to its opposite side. Affinity Photo 1. Affinity is a single tool in a toolbox full of tools but all the tools I use have their flaws but the benefit to that tool out-ways the deficiency in a particular area. That’s funny. Years ago I wanted to be more effective using Gimp that I known from the 90′ Linux distros we used, and they were a lot more modern in UI and feel than Windows or OS 9.

It wasn’t done in 1 hour. I think I was grumbling for at least a month I didn’t needed it every day on a personal level. But once I understand it better, andhow to find tool and use them with the slight difference there are with PS, no problem.

I had the same problem using AP : mask and some effect behaving differently, needing more tweaks and tricks than using Gimp… But I paid for it, it would have been stupid to stop. It’s different with Inkscape: I know it from when it was called Sodipodi, and it was helpfull to use it on Mac too. On Windows, I can see UI improvement since it was a pain to get other “skins” fully fonctional with older versions. Does if feel ugly or old? It’s only different.

Corel Draw had sophisticated tools for transforming and distorting vector graphics and text 30 years ago! Think of it. As nice as the apps look, there’s simply too much missing to make them real alternatives to Adobe CS.

It’s the same with Publisher which you can’t really rely on for complex print productions, or Affinity Photo, which doesn’t even have a tool to create a path from a selection. As much as I initially liked Affinity’s concept, I fear that the company may be financed by Adobe and set out only to milk the market of potential users of a cheaper but seemingly also professional software with another price model.

Once enough users bought it, it’s enough and they don’t develop vital functions any further to protect Adobe’s flagship CS.

I have mentioned before that I would be willing to pay for specific features and it is increasingly clear I am not alone. I Love you guys, love your products, but please, disclose your intentions on how you plan to move forward in terms of competing with the behemoth. It is difficult times here in the UK for everyone however a lot of companies and individuals have been hit by Covid badly. So we need to give them the benefit of the doubt. I still manage to do an vector job on it.

I come from 3D software, years of drama with Autodesk killing software so I’m used to learning new ways to do stuff. So the workarounds are a big faff but are there for something so affordable too. When I first came across Designer I got excited as it was the nearest thing I’d seen to Adobe Fireworks, however the lack of non destructive free transform tools is a real problem and we’ve been waiting a looong time without a peep from the people at Affinity I don’t do graphics or illustrations for money well, not often but I do need a full graphics suite and Affinity is the closest to the Adobe offering I have found.

That it is cross-platform is brilliant and that it is not subscription-based is absolutely the reason I chose it over Adobe. But there are omissions, and the free-form tool is the big one in my book. So yes, a clunky work-around is to select the paths to distort, go to Edit menu chose Edit in Photo, and use the distort filter there.

And then place as pixels in your original vector document. Clunky indeed. Hopefully someone will come up with a plugin? Not clunky, but completely useless in a lot of scenarios as the exported result will be pixels, not vector. Latter is needed i. Don’t get me wrong, Affinity apps are great and can do a lot of the daily tasks for many. I see it more as an alternative for private use and a small sector of professional designing. That’s all I wanted to say. And I don’t think that Serif is seriously trying to target Adobe’s main market.

For that, simply too many basics are way too “clunky” as you said or missing completely. If only they were to focus some energy on those essentials, they potentially could be a legitimate competitor, not perhaps universally, but at least to a wider segment of professionals.

I have just bought the iPad app and it is a great piece of software, but i sooooo miss perspective distort! Hi MEB It’s not enough if it only changes vector shapes. In designer you can use raster brushes to add texture, so a transformer tool should be able to change the raster elements too. I wanted to chime in that a free transform or perspective distort tool feels like basic functionality to me, and I can’t accomplish of a lot of the effects I want to achieve without it.

I would love if it were added for both vector and pixel elements, and could probably stop using Photoshop entirely for my design work if it were. Seeing how long people have been asking for this feature is pretty disheartening. We need vector perspective distort badly and other warp tools would be nice too to use this software professionally without frustrating workarounds.

I love Affinity. I was a Fireworks user years ago and was so annoyed when Adobe bought it and just let it die not realizing the value it brought in ease of use and layout for screen. Affinity has that intuitive ease of use but is missing this most important feature. I’m tired of trying to evangelize this software but having to say for years now, “It’s great, but We’re not there yet, but soooo close. Maybe Serif should get a round of funding and purchase VectorStyler to incorporate their features with some improvements for usability?

Or maybe you’re on the cusp of great things including this feature for version 2. Sure would be nice to have some idea when or even if this is going to be released. I don’t think that Serif is seriously trying to target Adobe’s main market. I also remember seeing an article before any affinity app was released not been able to find it that clearly stated the apps were a challenge to the Adobe suite. The article was a press release written by Serif.

Since you already bought Affinity, it’s also useless to tell Affinity that you will switch back to Adobe, too. But seeing that essential functions in both, Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer have not been integrated despite of so many user requests after more than 3 years! That’s the point. Affinity’s apps are not meant to be a full replacement for Adobe’s products.

There’s only a fraction of adobe’s customers which Serif is aiming at. That said, this doesn’t excuse the missing of some essential functions partially established for decades in comparable programs in their apps at all.
